Plywood and particleboard are both widely used for cabinet boxes, but they behave differently around moisture, fasteners, weight, and long-term wear. The right choice depends on budget, cabinet construction, installation quality, and where the cabinets will be used.

What is a plywood cabinet box?
Plywood is made from multiple thin wood veneers laminated in alternating directions. In cabinet construction, that layered structure gives the panel good stiffness and strong screw-holding ability. Plywood also tends to tolerate short-term moisture exposure better than standard particleboard, although no cabinet material should be treated as waterproof.
What is particleboard?
Particleboard is made from wood particles bonded with resin and compressed into panels. It can produce a very flat, consistent surface and is commonly used under laminate, melamine, and other cabinet finishes. Its quality varies substantially by density, resin system, edge treatment, and hardware.

Moisture resistance
Standard particleboard can swell if water penetrates an unfinished edge or damaged surface. Plywood is generally more forgiving, but prolonged leaks can damage plywood too. Sink bases, dishwasher areas, laundry cabinetry, and bathroom vanities deserve especially careful sealing, plumbing checks, and leak prevention.
Fasteners and hardware
Plywood generally holds screws well because fasteners engage multiple wood layers. Good-quality particleboard can also perform well when the cabinet system uses appropriate confirmat screws, dowels, cam fittings, and hinge mounting hardware. The entire cabinet construction method matters more than the panel name alone.

Which one should you choose?
If moisture tolerance, screw holding, and a more robust box are priorities, plywood is often preferred. If budget and a smooth, consistent engineered panel are more important, a well-made particleboard cabinet can still be a practical option. Ask for the actual cabinet specifications rather than relying only on the door sample.
