Kitchen cabinets last longer and keep their finish better when cleaning is gentle and moisture is controlled. Most cabinet surfaces do not need aggressive chemicals: regular wiping with a soft cloth, mild soap, and prompt cleanup of water and grease is usually the safest approach.
Use mild cleaners
Start with a microfiber or other soft cloth dampened with warm water. For grease or fingerprints, use a small amount of mild dish soap diluted in water. Wipe again with a clean damp cloth and then dry the surface. Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders, strong solvents, and harsh degreasers unless the cabinet manufacturer specifically approves them.
Do not leave water on cabinet surfaces
Water should not sit around sink bases, dishwasher edges, toe kicks, door bottoms, or unfinished panel edges. Even durable finishes can be damaged when moisture reaches joints or core material. If you see a plumbing leak, correct the leak first rather than repeatedly drying the cabinet.
Remove cooking grease before it hardens
Cabinets around the cooktop and hood collect airborne grease. Wipe these areas more frequently so the film does not harden. Use mild soap first; repeated aggressive scrubbing can change the sheen of painted or laminated surfaces.
Protect cabinets from heat and steam
Use the range hood when cooking and avoid directing steam from kettles, coffee makers, toaster ovens, or other countertop appliances directly at cabinet doors and finished panels. Heat and repeated condensation can affect finishes and edge joints over time.
Check hinges, drawer slides, and pulls
If a door begins to rub, sag, or close unevenly, adjust the hinge before continued use causes edge damage. Tighten loose handles carefully without overtightening. Soft-close hinges and drawer slides should move smoothly; forcing a misaligned drawer can damage hardware or the cabinet box.

- Excess water around seams and edges
- Furniture polish or wax unless approved for the specific finish
